About

My passion as a filmmaker comes from a fascination with the art of storytelling.  Be it narrative, documentary, experimental – convincing viewers that a dance of light and sound working in concert to create a fleeting reality enchants me. I am constantly seeking to stimulate the senses, leave emotional impressions, resuscitate memories, and open the mind to new worlds of thought, all hinging on the successful symbiotic relationship of multiple disciplines; script, acting, direction, cinematography, editing, and music. As a director, it is the thrill of being ringmaster to the circus. It is in this realm – the space between the artist and viewer – where the magic is, and where I am most fulfilled.

I grew up on a steady diet of Spielberg and Lucas, but expanded my palette at Michigan where I was introduced to a universe of cinematic forms and methods. I enjoy finding ways to incorporate that diversity into my projects. While my leanings are still toward the good ol’ populist narratives (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is in my top five) I am especially touched by the works of Fellini, Anthony McCall, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and other artists who saw film as a form not bound by accepted assumptions (8 ½ is in my top five).

With my feature film “One Half Gone” I collaborated on a script with the goal of producing a low budget feature narrative while directing it as if it had Hollywood backing. Character driven and personal, it was my first feature as director and I learned a great deal.

As an editor for live sports television for 20 years, I challenge myself to create within time constraints rapid fire moments that capture the energy and drama of athletic competition.

Working in a high school TV studio, I taught media literacy and how to employ various techniques of production to tell their stories in a compelling manner.

I am exploring the process of adapting a published work into a separate entity, one that merits its own perspective, with my screenplay “A MAD LIFE”.

In my current documentary “When We Went MAD!” I am directing a feature celebrating the influence of an American icon, MAD Magazine. In interviewing several artists and writers, as well as those who grew up with MAD, I am telling one story of the rise of popular culture and its effect on future artists. It is the culmination of my skillset using CGI whiz-bang animation and humorous faux-cumentaries all within a traditional documentary model.

That’s my story to date, dreaming of further chapters…
